A First Day Cover (FDC) is an envelope or card bearing a newly issued stamp, cancelled with a special postmark on the first day of that stamp's release. FDCs combine three elements that philatelists prize: the stamp itself, the first-day cancellation (also called a first-day of issue postmark), and often a specially designed envelope or cachet that complements the stamp's theme.
The tradition of FDCs in India is nearly as old as Indian commemorative stamps. The practice grew significantly in the post-independence era as India Post began releasing more commemorative issues. India Post itself began producing official FDCs — complete with matching pictorial cancellations and philatelic brochures — from the 1960s onwards. Today, every major Indian stamp release is accompanied by an official FDC, a miniature sheet, and a philatelic brochure.
Official FDCs — Produced by India Post (or the respective country's postal authority), these are the standard FDCs most collectors seek. They bear the official first-day cancellation and typically include a beautifully illustrated cachet design related to the stamp's theme.
Private / Philatelic Society FDCs — Produced by philatelic societies, clubs, or private publishers, these often feature more elaborate cachet artwork than the official versions and are produced in smaller quantities, making them rarer.
Maximum Cards (Maxi Cards) — A picture postcard bearing a matching stamp and a related cancellation. The matching of card, stamp, and cancel is the defining characteristic of a maximum card and requires skill and knowledge to assemble.
Special Event Covers — Covers produced for philatelic exhibitions, military campaigns, expeditions, or significant national events, cancelled with special event postmarks.
India Post accompanies most major stamp issues with an official philatelic brochure — a fold-out or booklet explaining the background of the stamp's subject, its design elements, technical specifications (printer, paper, perforations, dimensions), and the date of issue. These brochures are invaluable reference documents for collectors and are typically sold through Philatelic Bureaux. Complete FDC-plus-brochure sets are particularly desirable.
FDC collecting offers enormous variety. You can collect by country (Indian FDCs only), by theme (wildlife FDCs, Gandhi-related covers, sports FDCs), by era (early Republic India covers from the 1950s–70s are especially valued), or by type (official vs. private cachets). Condition matters — covers should be free of tears, stains, and writing, with stamps well affixed and cancellations clear.
