Matchbox Labels & Phillumeny – A Collector's Guide

Phillumeny (also spelled phillumeny or phillumenism) is the hobby of collecting matchbox labels and related match-related ephemera. The term derives from the Greek philos (love) and the Latin lumen (light). It is one of the world's older collecting hobbies, dating back to shortly after the commercial manufacture of matches began in the 1820s–1830s.

History of Matchbox Labels in India

The Indian match industry has a history stretching back to the late 19th century. Initially, matches were imported from Sweden and Britain — and their colourful labels began attracting collectors. By the early 20th century, India had its own match manufacturers, with factories in Sivakasi (Tamil Nadu) — which remains the matchbox capital of India to this day — as well as in other parts of the country.

Indian matchbox labels are a remarkable record of popular culture, nationalism, advertising, and art. Labels from the independence movement era frequently bore patriotic imagery — portraits of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose, the national flag, and freedom movement slogans. Other labels depicted gods and goddesses, animals, birds, film stars, sports, transport, and an enormous variety of commercial brand imagery.

Types of Matchbox Labels Collected

Safety Match Labels — The most common type, from household safety matches produced in India and worldwide.

Book Match Covers — Covers from matchbooks (as opposed to matchboxes), popular as advertising items from hotels, restaurants, and airlines.

Patriotic & Independence Labels — Highly collectible labels featuring freedom movement imagery, produced in the 1930s–1950s.

Film Star & Celebrity Labels — Labels bearing images of Bollywood stars, particularly from the 1950s–1970s, are eagerly collected by fans and ephemera collectors alike.

Export Labels — Indian match companies produced labels specifically for export to various countries, often bearing non-Indian imagery but manufactured in Sivakasi. These are collected both in India and abroad.

Foreign Labels — Labels from Sweden (where the modern safety match was invented), Japan (which produced an enormous variety of beautifully printed labels), Czechoslovakia, Belgium, and elsewhere are also collected in India.

Collecting & Preserving Matchbox Labels

Labels are typically collected by removing them from the matchbox, soaking them off cleanly, and mounting them in albums. Specialist plastic sleeves and pages designed for small labels are available. Labels should be stored away from direct light and moisture. Condition greatly affects value — labels free from tears, creases, and staining are most desirable.
