“ BIRDS ~ THE AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA.”
½ Oz Silver Proof Coin on Lenticular 3D Card.
AUSTRALIA’S FIRST SQUARE COIN.
This ½ oz coin from The Perth Mint's 2002 Proof Issue of the Australian Kookaburra Silver Bullion Coin Series is Australia’s first ever square-shaped legal tender coin.
Minted from 99.9% Pure Silver to proof-like standard, a maximum of 75,000 individual Square Kookaburra coins will be issued making unique gifts to cherish forever.
This is the first legal tender square coin to be issued in Australia. The concept, however, is not new. Between 1919 and 1921, the Commonwealth Government considered replacing the bulky bronze pennies and halfpennies with smaller, lighter square nickel coins.
A number of patterns were struck, each featuring a kookaburra design. The concept failed following concerns about the difficulty of manufacture and incompatibility with coin-operated vending machines of the time.
This particular coin is housed encapsulated, on a presentation card featuring a moving image.
Lenticular printing technology was used to portray the effect of a kookaburra hopping along the branch of a gum tree.
Year: 2002.
