It was 500 years ago,  on 12th October 1492, that Christopher Columbus first sighted the island of Guanahani in The Bahamas, which he renamed San Salvador, or 'Holy Saviour'.

To mark the historic 500th anniversary of Columbus' first landfall in the islands,  The Central Bank of The Bahamas authorized the printing of a special One Dollar banknote.
