King Charles II of Spain died on 1 November 1700 without an heir. His will is the grand-son of Louis XIV as King of Spain to the great disappointment of Austrians thought to succeed.

 Louis XIV accepted the placing on the throne of his little son, the Duke of Anjou under the name of Philip V. But he refuses to ratify the renunciation of the throne of France of the future king of Spain.

 Hence the concern Austrians, Germanic and the English to see the opportunity to meet the kingdoms of France and Spain.

The balance of forces in Europe would be broken and very threatening to these states. On 15 May 1702, the United Provinces of the Netherlands, Portugal, England, Prussia, Savoy, Hanover, and the Empire of Austria declare war on France.   This is the war of the Spanish Succession. It ended on April 11, 1713 by the Treaty of Utrecht.
