" 'This is 2LO calling' was very probably the first radio catchphrase, '2LO' being the BBC's London station. Daily BBC broadcasts began from here on 14 November 1922. Presenter Arthur Burrows would read the news once, then repeat it slowly.

Only a few people would have listened as 'wireless' sets were still a new-fangled luxury, and the signal transmitted just 20 miles. The British Broadcasting Company had a staff of four and was financed by an annual Post Office licence fee of ten shillings."
