" Modern society is built on adequate and secure energy supplies. Our high standards of living and well-being have rapidly come to depend on it. But, until the oil embargo following the Arab-Israeli war of 1973, modern generations took an assured energy supply for granted. It was cheap, and there appeared to be no shortage.

In the last 30 years oil has become the dominant primary fuel in the world's overall energy requirement. Demand has grown so rapidly that, before the end of the century, some 80 percent of known reserves will have been consumed.

Now the energy future is uncertain."
