William Wyon was born into a distinguished family of engravers and medallists in 1795 and it was soon apparent that he was to become a great artist in his own right. 

As a young boy he won the Society of Arts gold medal and in the year he came of age he began his career at the Royal Mint when, after completing anonymously for the post of Second Engraver, his entry was chosen as by far the most skilful.

Today he is widely remembered for the coinage portraits of George IV and William IV, both successfully adapted from busts by Sir Francis Chantrey, and best of all for those of Queen Victoria, by which time he had been promoted to Chief Engraver.

His beautiful 'Young Head' of Victoria, created for the coins of the new reign, received universal acclaim.
