1715. The King is dead: long live the King. Louis XV succeeds Louis XIV. This is the period during which Jean Martell, seafarer and merchant, chose to settle in Cognac. His family had been esablished in the Island of Jersey since the end of the Middle Ages.

Great Britain was then ruler of Europe. All powerful on the seas, she signed a treaty of alliance with Holland.

Jean Martell very cleverly took advantage of his connections with the Channel islands and England. Soon he was also doing business with the Low Countries, Germany and Scandinavia ..
