PHILIPPE D'AUVERGNE and the FRENCH REVOLUTION
It is the year 1786. Philipe D'Auvergne, junior Captain in England's Navy, conducting 21-year old John Townshend, son of Lord Sydney, English Home Secretary, on the Grand Tour of France and Europe, reaches Fontainebleau.
And what better escort, to complete the young man's education ? Fourth and only surviving child of a family well-known in Jersey from the early 14th century, D'Auvergne's first language is French, like that of all his countymen but, like theirs his allegiance is to England.
His father's friendship with Lord Howe, English Vice-Admiral and First Lord of the Admiralty, had procured for him in 1770 a berth in the Royal Yacht, then service as Midshipman in a Frigate ...
Year: 1989.
