OUR GREATEST CENTURY

1900 - 1999

Marshall Islands, a former U.S. Trust Territory, consists of over 1200 islands spread over an area of 750,000 square miles in the Pacific Ocean.

Over a 3 year period, starting in 1997, they issued a series of postage stamps that chronicled 150 key events & landmark innovations from the 20th Century.

Each sheet has 15 stamps which depict the important / path-breaking events of the resp. decade.

1900 - 1909: Decade of New Possibilities.

The opening of the 20th Century reflected the great expectations of people everywhere for a new century of progress. In just 10 years, extraordinary people and events set the stage for the entire epoch, which made the children of the 20th Century witnesses to more change than anyone who ever walked the Earth.

1910 - 1919: Decade of Revolution and Great War.

Irresistible forces turned the world upside down as the 20th Century marched through its second decade. In just 10 years, simmering discontent and revolutionary ideas reshaped geographic, political, artistic and scientific frontiers, sowing seeds of turmoil for decades to come.

1920 - 1929: Decade of Optimism and Disillusionment

Emerging from the carnage of The Great War, mankind anticipated an era of lasting peace. These 10 years of breathtaking discoveries, technological ingenuity and frenetic social change provided the backdrop to a mere illusion of prosperity as the unsettled world lurched toward tyranny.

1930 - 1939: Decade of the Great Depression

The desperate hardship of the Great Depression shaped the world and an entire generation. It was a decade given hope by marvels of technology and engineering, but overshadowed by aggressive, expansive totalitarianism doing its will and rehearsing for global conflict.

1940 - 1949: Decade of War and Peace.

The decade opened on the note of grim determination of peoples fighting for survival in a war becoming world wide. Ten years later hopes of peace dearly won were unsettled by the new and dangerous Cold War armed by new weapons of mass destruction.

1950 - 1959: Decade of Peril and Progress.

From start to finish, the decade witnessed a heated struggle between communism & democracy. There would be no turning back as people's won their freedom, scientists delivered breakthroughs, & mankind's quests challenged limits of geography, time & place.

1960 - 1969: Decade of Upheaval & Exploration.

In the shadow of the Cold War, the Vietnam War, and an Arab-Israeli War, this decade answered bold dreams with breathtaking achievements, but violent spasms shook d world ..

1970 - 1979: Decade of Detente & Discovery.

For 10 years the great powers built bridges of detente, while a maelstrom of violence & economic crisis immersed the world in turmoil. To serendipity belonged the celebration of the past & prospect of the future.

1980 - 1989: Decade of People & Democracy.

Enabled by new technologies, emboldened by strength in unity, people embraced the information age, ushered in a new era of democracy, witnessed the fall of Communism and confronted terrorism & disaster on a world scale.

1990 - 1999: Decade of New Possibilities.

Witness to crumbling walls & falling frontiers, the decade recorded bold steps toward a new millennium of peoples with interests, institutions & economies interconnected as never before. Confident in this vision, nations joined to end tribalism's threats of violence & dislocation on the relentlessly shrinking planet Earth.
