The new “adidas” commemorative, of this there can be no doubt, is a philatelic world sensation. Rarely has the trade press been so unanimous: never before has there been a similar product.

UEFA EURO 2008™, due to take place from 7 to 29 June 2008, is the largest sporting event ever held in Austria. The Austrian Post Office is amongst them and, as national sponsor of the event, is organising a wide variety of activities to mark the occasion.

One is the issue of attractive commemoratives to delight both the worldwide philatelic community and the much larger group of football fans.

The “adidas” commemorative is a stunning addition to this topic related series of stamps. Its special feature is that the round self-adhesive stamp is made of the same material, a synthetic mixture containing polyurethane, as the original ball used for the UEFA EURO 2008™ (known as the “Europass”), which was presented on the occasion of the draw in Lucerne on 2 December 2007.

 Countless analyses and trials were made over many months in order to ensure that this material could be printed on. The success of the experiment confirmed the boldness of the decision of the companies involved: they had created an innovation on the international philately market, and it was now time to start the complex production process.
