The natural environment in the Netherlands is in jeopardy. The Natuurmonumenten Association, with more than 800,000 members, is actively engaged in the protection and maintenance of natural reserves.

Large grazers are used to manage and develop these areas. For example, the Shetland pony is one such natural 'lawn mower'.
